Properly filling out the initial security clearance application form [e-QIP or SF-86]
is an essential first step towards obtaining a security clearance. The later interview, possible interrogatories, and the
possible hearing to determine whether a clearance is granted or denied will all be affected by the answers you give. If it
does come to a hearing, in most cases Exhibit "A" for the Government will be your initial e-QIP or SF-86.
You may get conflicting or incorrect information from Facility Security Officers or others as to the meaning or application
of certain questions. In reality, some questions may require careful interpretation in light of applicable security Guidelines
and your individual circumstances. It may be advantageous for you to provide more information than is requested for some questions
and the minimum information required for others. Care must be taken to avoid unnecessarily inviting denial while also meeting
the obligation to give "full frank and truthful" answers [DoD Directive 5220.6, 6.2].
